Being best friends forever takes effort. There's no magic formula for friendship glue. First to determine your personality type and again to identify your bud's. Better yet, take it together. Mark your answers on paper so you can each take this quiz without knowing how the other responds. Honesty counts! Then read on to discover some important stuff on how to keep the friendship clicking

1.) You've just been elected to serve on the Student Council. Naturally, you are the... A. Treasurer. Show you the money! B. Social Committee Chair. You're all about planning--pep rallies, dances and fundraisers. C. President. Need we say more? D. School Ambassador. You are the perfect mediator, and everyone trusts you.

2.)You get easily annoyed with anyone who is... A. Unpredictable. B. Boring. C. Indecisive. D. Insensitive.

3 Your sister asks for your worldly advice on the benefits of eyebrow tweezing. You... A. Carefully ponder it before answering. B. Respond pronto--your first thoughts tend to be the best ones. C. Give her the only advice worth listening to. After all, who is more worldly than you?

D. Are sure not to hurt her feelings but tell her the truth (her brows are a bit bushy)

4 Your motto would have to be, "It's not whether you win or lose, it's... A. "How you play the game." B. "How you look when you're playing!" C. "All about winning." D. "Teamwork that counts!"

5 When choosing your duds for school, you dress... A. Accordingly. You're the Weather Channel's biggest fan! B. To impress. You intend to make a fashion statement. C. For success. You have a no-nonsense style. D. For comfort. If it feels good, wear it.

6 You're throwing your annual back-to-school bash in a mere two weeks. You... A. Have every last detail, from the tunes to the soda selection, accounted for on your party checklist. B. Have everybody who is anybody clamoring to be on your guest list. C. Have your mom take over. She's the best at making food, decorating, the whole shebang. D. Just hope everybody enjoys themselves.

7 During lunch time, you're busy... A. Finishing your homework for tomorrow. B. Catching up on the latest gossip. C. Scoping out plans for the upcoming weekend. D. Making friends with the new kid.

WHAT'S YOUR STYLE?
Mostly A's
THE THINKER
You're a perfectionist. You don't necessarily need things done your way--just the right way! You have high expectations of yourself, your friends and your relationships. You're also less likely to do something to hurt someone you care about because you always think long and hard before you do or say anything!
After a bud battle, you are the one tossing and turning over what went wrong. Besides being hurt by "heated discussions," you are often baffled by the sudden turn of events.

Mostly's B's
THE SOCIALIZER
Take a quick glance at your datebook. Any empty space in sight? Nope--not for a social bug like you! You've got a schedule chock full o' fun.
You don't merely take center stage--you are center stage. Your life is filled with praise and compliments. And it is through no small effort of your own. You're friendly, spontaneous and enthusiastic about everything. Even if you're not the one to throw the party, you are the one who's guaranteed to be invited!

Mostly C's
THE DOMINATOR
You like to be in control, but that doesn't necessarily mean you want to be the center of attention. You're the producer rather than the leading lady.
You're confident, independent and quite a go-get-'em gal. There's no time for stress in your life. You're a problem solver--and a quick one at that! Ah, but with your efficient style comes impatience. Peeps know to stay out of your way when you have somewhere to be!

Mostly D's
THE RELATER
In a time of need, you're a friend indeed. Whether it's a shoulder to cry on or just a hug, you are most definitely on your friends' A List. Loyalty could be your nickname! You want what's best for you and your buds, and you work hard to help maintain harmony.
You can be a bit soft-spoken because you hate to take sides. You refuse to rock the boat and tend to sway with the status quo. But, hey, change can be good.

Your Flourishing Friendship...
You are: DOMINATOR
Your bud is: SOCIALIZER
Things often work out well for the two of you. You're the gal who makes it all happen--deciding what parties you guys will attend or which matinee to hit. Your bud, the Socializer, is happy to follow your direction as long as her social life is brimming with excitement.
School brings changes, so be patient with your Socializer bud. She's apt to spend time hanging with lots of classmates and, of course, getting the latest dish. Stay involved with all your activities 'til Miss Flighty comes flittering by for your companionship and guidance.

You are: DOMINATOR
Your bud is: RELATER
Your bud, the Relater, is often your saving grace. Being the control-hungry girl that you are, you can rub people the wrong way. However, your loyal buddy comes to the rescue, smoothing things over and keeping everyone happy! The Relater isn't as opinionated as you are, so don't overwhelm her.

As we have grown and changed so have our ideas on friendship . I found something which sums up the essence of Friendship

1. In kindergarten your idea of a good friend was the person who letyou have the red crayon when all that was left was the ugly black one..

2. In first grade your idea of a good friend was the person who went to the bathroom with you and held your hand as you walked through the scary halls.

3. In second grade your idea of a good friend was the person who helped you stand up to the class bully.

4. In third grade your idea of a good friend was the person who shared their lunch with you when you forgot yours on the bus.

5. In fourth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who was willing to switch square dancing partners in gym so you wouldn't have to be stuck do-si-do-ing with Nasty Nicky or Smelly Susan.

6. In fifth grade your idea of a friend was the person who saved a seat on the back of the bus for you.

7. In sixth grade your idea of a friend was the person who went up to Nick or Susan, your new crush, and asked them to dance with you, so that if they said no you wouldn't have to be embarrassed.

8. In seventh grade your idea of a friend was the person who let youcopy the social studies homework from the night before that you had forgotten about.

9. In eighth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who helped you pack up your stuffed animals and old baseball cards so that your room would be a "high schooler's" room, but didn't laugh at you when you finished and broke out into tears.

10. In ninth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who went with you to that "cool" party thrown by a senior so you wouldn't wind up being the only freshman there.

11. In tenth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who changed their schedule so you would have someone to sit with at lunch.

12. In eleventh grade your idea of a good friend was the person who gave you rides in their new car, convinced your parents that you shouldn't be grounded, consoled you when you broke up with Nick or Susan, and found you date to the prom.

13. In twelfth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who helped you pick out a college, assured you that you would get into that college, helped you deal with your parents who were having a hard time adjusting to the idea of letting you go...

14. At graduation your idea of a good friend was the person who was crying on the inside but managed the biggest smile one could give as they congratulated you.

15. The summer after twelfth grade your idea of a good friend was the person who helped you clean up the bottles from that party, helped you sneak out of the house when you just couldn't deal with your parents, assured you that now that you and Nick or you and Susan were back together, you could make through anything, helped you pack up for college and just silently hugged you as you looked through blurry eyes at 18 years of memories you were leaving behind,
and finally on those last days of childhood, went out of their way to come over and send you off with a hug, a lot of memories, reassurance that you would make it in college as well as you had
these past 18 years, and most importantly sent you off to college knowing you were loved.

16. Now, your idea of a good friend is still the person who gives you the better of the two choices, hold your hand when you're scared, helps you fight off those who try to take advantage of you, thinks of you at the college as well as you had these past 18 years, and most importantly when you are not there, reminds you of what you have forgotten, helps you put the past behind you but understands when you need to hold on to it a little longer, stays with you so that you have confidence, goes out of their way to make time for you, helps you up your mistakes, helps you deal with pressure from others, smiles for you when they are sad, helps you become a better
person, and most importantly loves you!

Techcrunch recently featured social networking sites which focussed on" Friendship between Men". True these sites are among the few niches in a segment that in increasingly beginning to look crowded with me too Friendship social networking sites that are being launched almost daily .But it is precisely the diversity that makes up the social networks and it is that niche segment that it targets that make up their USP .

Marshall Kirkpatrick of Techcrunch talks of the potential of these niche social networking sites when he says that Niche social networks are likely a viable business because they allow specialized functionality and a subjective community feel as opposed to general interest sites that defer to either the lowest common denominator or the 15-25 year old demographics

I decided to take a look at the few Friendship Networking sites that focussed on "Men Friends"and find out how they reach out to Men Friends

http://bigjock.com/ : This has all the features of a Social networking Friendship site with a blog, classifieds,Forums, Picture rating,Groups and events .One feature which I liked was the News headlines" which mainly focussed on Gay news . This site is free and suported by ads.

http://www.jaketm.org : This site calls itself as the Largest Gay Comunity with almost 30,000 members . Unlike other sites this site allows its members to get as much commercial benefit out of our technology as possible. In other words one can advertise their company, for jobs, sell stuff on the forums, or just use it to meet new people. It would be interesting to see how this site manages the downside of allowing its site to be a sort of free commercial medium when some SN sites are coming down heavily on spamers and fake profiles .Iwas also impressed with how it sucesfully created trusted and constructed profiles .Watch out this site in the days to come .

http://manjam.com :Techcruch lists this as probably the most widely discussed of all of these social networking sites. It calls itself “a unique social network” but in fact it’s just one of many similarly branded copycat sites from JuxMedia Ltd. ManJam offers listings for rooms and houses for rent or to live in rent-free. There are listings from all around the world. There are job and business listings, many of which are in the Middle East. There are personal profile listings with text and video comments enabled for members. Free membership gets users access to rental listing details, IM, video and audio messaging. There is also a mobile component to ManJam. Profiles on this site support transgendered identities.
Premium members get entries in any of the categories moved up to the top of their respective listings. Paid accounts are $20 per month, $42 per quarter or $90 per year.

Mashable reports that social networking sites for friendship between men and women are going to be lauched by Mid january
GLEE.com is a “social and professional networking site” for the LGBT community. It’s a product of Community Connect, which already has more than 16 million users on its niche social networks BlackPlanet, MiGente and Asian Avenue. The company conducted a survey of LGBT people who actively used social portals and found that 76% would prefer a gay social and professional network to either generic sites like MySpace and Friendster or existing gay dating sitesOurChart.com is the social network spin-off of the Showtime series The L Word. As mentioned previously, the name “OurChart” derives from a chart in the series created by the character Alice, who uses it to map her relationships.SocialButter - This gay and lesbian social network is set to launch in mid-January, providing a platform for “online socializing and real world connections”.

Friendships between men social networking sites are still a niche . However I feel this should be one of the most well targeted and segmented markets in the days to come . It would be interesting to see how these sites can monetise their traffic and how many of them survive thhe social networking boom.

I could not but reproduce Blaugh take on Friendster which has recently been awarded the US patent title for U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has awarded a new U.S. Patent
titled “A System, Method and Apparatus for Connecting Users in an Online Computer System Based on TheirRelationships within Social Networks” (Number 7,069,308). The patent, which was awarded to Friendster and lists Jonathan Abrams as the inventor, outlines a system, method and apparatus for connecting users in anonline computer system based on their relationships within social networks.
The patent’s claims cover the unique system for calculating, displaying and acting upon relationships in a socialnetwork. This invention led to the emergence of widely adopted online social networking systems."This patent is the first of many expected to be awarded to Friendster over the next several years and underscores
the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation in social networking,” said Kent Lindstrom, presidentof Friendster. The technology patented was developed by Friendster founder, Jonathan Abrams, in 2003.

I came across a Harris Interactive poll entitled Friendship in the Age of Social Networking Websites that contained an interesting statistics regarding "Friendship in the age of social networking" . Myspace, facebook, Friendster and other Social Networking sites has completely redefined the concept of Friendship in today world.Today Online social networking sites provides teens to talk to virtual strangers and strike up friendship online and express themselves through Pictures, Blogs,Videos and even broadcast themselves live through a webcam. More than twice as many as 13-17 age group say that they prefer to spend their times with friends than parents(56% vs 22% )For teens friendship is being developed beyond the walls of the classroom and home and is increasingly shaped in Online hangouts like Myspace, tagworld ,Facebook,Bebo,Stickam and other SN sites .
The poll found that teens have an average of 52 friends on the IM buddy list, 38 friends entered in their cell phone - but they have 75 friends in SNS. The poll also found a 75% of teens use SNS. This is a useful point of comparison for Researchers and Companies interested in the nature of friendship on Social Networking sites.

One rather interesting aspect was around 36% of the age group 13-18 has friends whom they never met in person and only talked to them online ,while 87% had friends whom they talked to both in person and online .
The poll found that teens have an average of 52 friends on the IM buddy list, 38 friends entered in their cell phone list, but they have 75 friends in SNS. The poll also found a 75% of teens use SNS

This survey onlso strengthens my belief that consumer good companies and Greeting card companies have to move with the times .Products and Advertisements have to target teens keeping in mind where they spend the bulk of their time Online .Social networking sites are fertile ground for tagetting this segment .Social networking sites provides teens to form groups and Niches regarding what they like and what they dont , Marketers are sitting on a great opportunity to target these teens through highly interactive marketing process .Companies must learn to embedd social networking into their sites around their central core . One great example to how some brands are integrating social networking to their sites is 123greetings.com. They have added codes of many social networking sites whcih lets users embedd the card pages directly by copying and pasting directly to their profiles or as photo comments . You can check them out at 123Greetings Birthday ECards Section.

You can also check out Fred Stutzman blog on Online Friendship here
